The woman spinning thread is presumed to be Clotho/Klotho, a goddess from Greek mythology.
She is one of three sister goddesses. The goddess depicted on this cup spins the thread of human destiny, while another goddess assigns that thread to each person's life, and yet another goddess snips the thread with scissors. Together, they are known as the Three Fates.
Which role would you choose?
The role of assigning the length of the thread is definitely the one I'd want to avoid most.
But since they are goddesses, they probably just calmly and diligently fulfill their duties.
In the human world, there are times when I can't help but feel that there's a predetermined destiny, and no matter how much humans struggle, it's unavoidable, both the good and the bad.
Viewed in that light, the magnificent floral relief decoration on this saucer, capturing the peak of its盛り (mori,盛り-relief or mound), seems to convey more than just beauty.
And this makes me wonder if there might have been cups for the other two goddesses. Three cups and saucers of the Fates… that would be incredible.
While there are signs of wear and minor scratches due to age, no significant damage worthy of special mention is observed.
