This owl was passed on by someone who lovingly and forcefully insisted, "This is a candlestick! This owl is about 125 years old, but it's undamaged and in wonderful condition!"
Truly. It's amazing it's remained undamaged 🦉
However, I disagree✋ that it's a candlestick. I suspect it was originally an inkwell, and there was probably a small lid on top of the water lily.
As a candlestick, wouldn't the diameter of the candle holder part (approx. 2.8cm D) be a bit too large? The shape of the inner upper part of the water lily flower suggests a lid was attached...
Of course, there's no reason to deny it's a candlestick either.
The flow of "owl → night → dark → candlelight" is natural.
However,
The theory of "owl → wisdom → books → pen → inkwell" might also work.
What do you all think?
This owl certainly knows, but it won't tell me, LOL.
This "something" is a very rare Art Nouveau/Jugendstil owl and water lily from Rörstrand, Sweden.
It's an owl with a wonderfully tasteful presence and expression.
The combination of a water lily and an owl is also mysterious.
Is there some meaning behind the water lily leaves, the water lily flower, and the owl?
You could display a pinecone, find a small lidded container to set in it and use it as an inkpot, or use it as a candle holder for thicker candles.
But even without trying to do anything with it, just placing it and looking at it is enjoyable and beautiful.
This owl. It speaks to me.
There is wear and small scratches due to age and use. No chips or other major damage worth noting, and it is in beautiful, good antique condition.
